One of the greatest solutions for getting control of our mind is stated by the Apostle Paul: "Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4.8
First. It is a fact that the human mind cannot think about two things at the same time. Try it. Try to think about a news item and a scientific fact at the same time. Your mind may be able to toggle back and forth between the two ideas, it cannot think about both at the same time. Therefore, we can displace one idea with another!
Second. We can choose what we think about! Our thought life is a choice. We can get into the habit of thinking in certain ways, and then convince ourselves that we cannot choose what we think about, but we are just subject to a habit of thinking. We are not unable to control our thinking. We simply need to replace the habit of thinking which is nonproductive, destructive or a source of chaos in our lives.
Third. It takes about 30 days of consistently practicing a new habit in order to replace an old habit. If we "try" thinking in faith for six days, and then lapse back into fear and worry for a couple of days, the clock is reset. We start toward the goal of 30 days of intentionally practicing the new habit. When we have practiced the new habit for 30 days, we probably will not have to think about our new way of thinking. It will become "instinctive"! The new habit will have replaced the old.
Now, we have eight things to think about rather than the things we fear and the things we worry about: Truth, Honorable, Just, Pure, Lovely, Commendable, Excellence, Worthy of Praise things! Admit it. Most of the things that cause us fear and worry and anxiety are not based in truth, honorable, justice, purity, loveliness, commendable, excellent, praiseworthy things.
If our worries are true, why do they usually not come true?
If our worries are honorable, why do we get so defensive when it is pointed out to us that we are worrying about things that are not a priority?
If our fears are based in Justice, and if God is the Source of Justice, then why are we fearing? Can't we trust God instead of being pre-occupied by fear?
Are you getting the point? You have surrendered your mind to fear and worry and negativity. But, you have a choice. You can believe that God IS in control, and start living as He purposed you to live.
Overcome the fear and worry through faith, and get on with being the person God created and purposed you to be!

Following Jesus as His disciples requires that we study and do His Words and be His disciples. Discipleship is not accomplished by being a follower of men or preachers or televangelists or programs or churchianity or revivals. We need to study discipleship in order to be His disciples. Jesus said that where two or three of His disciples are gathered together, He is in their midst. Thus, His church exists wherever any of His followers are seeking Him and doing His will. Discipleship requires repentance, faith in the Good News of the Kingdom of God, denying self, taking up our cross daily and following Jesus. Teaching discipleship is simply living as Jesus teaches us to live and proclaiming His Words. |
